Spotify users have long been able to see what songs their friends are listening to thanks to the platform’s social features and Facebook. Spotify continues to test new features for its application and the latest leak points to a very interesting one. Thanks to a video contributed by Chris Messina from his Twitter account, today we know that Spotify is testing a new tab in its app .
This tab is called ‘Community’ and it will show in real time the songs your friends are listening to on Spotify. The list shows all kinds of information (song name, artist, album, etc.) and also supports podcasts and audiobooks. It’s quite an interesting novelty, but it actually draws a lot from the ‘Activity’ tab that has been in the app for a long time.
We say the latter for three reasons: first, because of the obvious resemblance between this new tab and the ‘Activity’ sidebar of Spotify for computers; second, because in the ‘Community’ window you can also see the last song a friend listened to, even if it was minutes, hours or days ago. And third, because users will have to have Spotify connected to their Facebook account in order to extract the list of songs.
We don’t know if the platform intends to do much more with this new window, although it will surely replace the ‘Activity’ tab. However, Spotify has already confirmed that this functionality is in a very early stage of development , so there is still a long way to go.
Spotify’s ‘Community’ tab is only accessible from iOS, for now
Beyond the video in the previous section, you may be curious to jump in and explore this new tab in the Spotify app. However, we have bad news for you if you have an Android mobile: the tab preview is only visible if you have an iPhone .
How do you access this functionality? Opening Safari and going to ‘spotify:community’ using the address bar. This will take you to the Spotify app, directly to the tab in question.
How long will it take for the developers to finish this new window and release it for all users to enjoy? We do not know, especially since its development is very green, but they may surprise us soon. In the meantime, you can enjoy other Spotify features such as viewing your listening history, showing the lyrics of your favorite songs in the app, and more.
