For more than a year, WhatsApp, one of the most famous instant messaging applications, decided to add the option to send a photo or video that can only be viewed once to its functions. Said file is deleted immediately once it is closed. Now, for greater security, users of the app will not be able to record the screen or take a screenshot while these files are open .
Photos and videos with self-destruction, a very useful function
Imagine you want to share a photo or video with some sensitive content to a person, i.e. you want the person to only be able to see it once, that’s the main reason why this feature was designed in the first place. The Meta app is not the first to implement this feature as we saw it before on Telegram and long before that on Snapchat.
The concept is simple, the file is sent, the other person receives it and it is shown in the chat as an icon without a thumbnail or something that indicates the content of the file. It is opened and the person can keep it open as long as they want, but once it is closed, the file is immediately deleted from the mobile and there is no way to recover it .
Why does WhatsApp decide to implement the restriction on the screenshot?
Not being able to record the screen or take screenshots is limited only to photos and videos that can only be viewed once , that is, with any other kind of content, it will still be possible to record the screen or take a screenshot.
The reason why WhatsApp decided to implement this restriction is because being able to record the screen or take a screenshot of what should only be seen once completely defeats the main purpose of this feature.
Again, this feature is not new, as Telegram and Snapchat had implemented the same restrictions on self-destructing content, expanding it even to secret chats long before. However, Snapchat takes it one step further, announcing to the other person that you tried to take a screenshot.
In the case of WhatsApp, the other person will not be told anything in case you try to take a screenshot, you will only be shown a pop-up message with the legend ” You cannot take a screenshot due to security policy “.
When will this restriction be implemented on WhatsApp?
For now, we’re talking about a feature that’s still in beta. It’s being tested with a fairly small audience and should hit a larger beta test in a few weeks. That is to say, there is still some time before the Meta application implements this new restriction to the general public .
