The European Union has a new proposal and just as it once wanted you to change an app for your WhatsApp, now it wants applications like WhatsApp and iMessage to be compatible with other messaging applications . But, what is the reason for this proposal from the European Union?
The EU could make WhatsApp and iMessage compatible with other apps
Some technology companies have been in the crosshairs of the European Union and now it is the turn of messaging apps. Indeed, the EU wants popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, iMessage or even Facebook Messenger to be able to send and receive messages from their smaller competitors.
The proposal of the European Union not only includes the sending of messages between different messaging applications . In fact, the proposal also includes sending calls and files between messaging apps.
This EU measure is an attempt to open up competition in the technological world and in this case, messaging apps . In addition, this proposal is aligned with other antitrust that the European Union currently has in progress, such as the Digital Markets Law.
The EU proposal seeks messaging platforms to communicate with each other. In other words, the EU wants messaging apps to work like WhatsApp or Google Messages that send and receive messages between Android and iOS users . Please note that iMessage no longer works on Android because Apple has acknowledged that it doesn’t want iMessage on Android.
Now, if this EU proposal is approved, it will apply to any messaging app with more than 45 million monthly active users . If this proposal is approved, it will be a measure that will only be taken in Europe. In addition, if any technology company decides not to comply with this law (if passed), they could be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover. The fine that companies that do not comply with the law would receive could even increase if they continue not to comply.
On the other hand, compatibility between messaging apps could take a while and the EU is willing to wait . Please note that the European Union expects messages sent between different messaging apps to be end-to-end encrypted.
This proposal does not only apply to messaging apps such as WhatsApp or iMessage , but also to other apps such as browsers or search engines.
No doubt this EU proposal looks quite interesting . In fact, this law will allow users of small messaging apps like Secretum, the blockchain-based messaging app, to be compatible with larger ones like WhatsApp.
In any case, we will have to wait to confirm if this proposal does become law . In addition, as we have said before, the compatibility between messaging apps could also take time.
