Goodbye to SIM cards: Android 13 prepares important changes

Among the novelties of the future Android 13 , a new system awaits us to eliminate physical SIM cards . Google is optimizing virtual eSIM cards so that manufacturers will consider doing without the current trays to introduce physical SIMs.

Among the novelties of Android 13 will include support for dual SIM using two eSIMs , something that was not possible until now. It will not be necessary for the mobile manufacturer to integrate two eSIM chips into the mobile, but Android 13 will manage the profiles of each line with its associated phone number.

In addition, it will be possible to use two eSIMs from different operators at the same time, so virtual cards would offer the same possibilities as physical SIMs.

The eSIM is an internal chip inside the phone , which identifies us to the mobile operator through the password that it provides us. Therefore, it simplifies portability, since we no longer need to get a SIM in a store or receive it by post.

For now, very few mobiles, such as the ultra-thin Motorola Razr, have dispensed with the physical SIM in favor of the eSIM. With Android 13, mobile brands will probably change their minds, having dual SIM functions available.

The fact of eliminating the SIM tray will mean more interior space , which can be dedicated to a larger battery or better cameras. In addition, one less hole will make it easier to seal waterproof mobiles.

On the other hand, if the SIMs are removed, we can be sure that the slots to expand the storage via MicroSD will disappear along with them, since they share the same tray.

The leaks suggest that the iPhone 15 will no longer have a SIM slot, and the iSIM standard is even being worked on for the next few years, where the eSIM is not an independent chip on the mobile plate, but rather is integrated inside of the processor.

It seems that the physical SIM will not have much time left after the arrival of Android 13 , although the operators are quite resistant to change, in the medium term it is inevitable.
