The future is today! Samsung already manufactures 3 nanometer processors

Samsung ya fabrica chips de 3 nm para moviles comienza la nueva era

We are getting closer to reaching the physical limit of the semiconductor lithographic technology used for the production of processors . A couple of years ago, the goal of reaching the 1nm technology that will mark the end of the chipset manufacturing process that is used today seemed distant. But, today, it seems that this goal is just around the corner.

We still hadn’t finished assimilating the great leap that was the 4nm technology with which the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 9000 and the Exynos 2200 are manufactured, and there was already speculation about who would be the first to launch a 3nm chipset. Well, now we have the answer to this question. Samsung has just announced that it is already producing the first 3 nanometer SoCs .

The new era begins: Samsung goes ahead and already starts the production of 3nm chipsets in Korea

Although TSMC had announced major advances in 3-nanometer technology, Samsung has beaten them to it. The brand has just announced that it has started production of 3nm processors at its Hwaseong semiconductor factory . With this, it officially becomes the first mobile chipset manufacturer to achieve this technological milestone.

Additionally, the Korean company has also announced major changes to its SoC manufacturing process . To begin with, it abandons the FinFET architecture for the new GAA (Gate All Around), which, as can be seen in the video, will mean an improvement in energy efficiency for its chipsets . Likewise, it also changes the technology of nanowires for nanosheets in favor of reducing energy consumption.

According to Samsung, the jump from 5nm to 3nm technology represents a 23% performance improvement and a 16% size reduction . In addition, they expect that with the second generation of their 3nm SoCs, they will achieve a 50% improvement in energy efficiency, 30% more performance and a 35% area reduction.

Finally, it is very likely that the first processor of the house to arrive with this technology will be the Exynos 2300 , a model that will probably give Samsung’s chipsets a wash that until now have not achieved the acceptance in the market that those of Qualcomm or MediaTek.
