Netflix’s new cheap ad-supported plan sounds like a joke in bad taste. On top of showing you annoying ads from time to time, it’s only €2.5 cheaper, it doesn’t allow you to download the content, and now it’s been confirmed that it can’t be used on all devices . The service’s official support page has just been updated to report that Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra (without Google TV) are not compatible with Netflix’s “Basic with Ads” plan.
It is important to clarify that the only non-compatible Chromecasts are those that do not have Google TV. That means that Chromecasts with Google TV 4K and HD do support this new Netflix plan. But if you have a Chromecast that does not have Google TV (those where you can only play content by sending it to it from another device) you will not be able to enjoy the cheap Netflix plan with ads. You won’t be able to do it on an Apple TV, either. The platform recommends you upgrade your plan to Basic, Standard or Premium to continue enjoying it.
All devices that are not compatible with the Netflix plan with ads
On the Netflix support website you can also read that Chromecast and Apple TV will not be the only devices that will not be able to play their plan with ads . Here is a list of all the devices where a Netflix subscription with ads cannot be used:
- First, second or third generation Chromecast.
- Chromecast Ultra.
- AppleTV.
- Playstation 3.
- The Netflix app for Windows.
- Apple devices running iOS 14 or lower.
- Android devices running Android 6 or lower.
As you can see, the list of devices incompatible with Netflix’s “Basic with ads” plan is longer than we thought. Why? It is probably due to some technological limitation that prevents the ads from playing correctly on these devices. Also, keep in mind that most of them are already very old (they are not supported by their manufacturers) and they surely have certain vulnerabilities that can be exploited to skip the ads . Maybe that’s why Netflix doesn’t allow you to use subscription with ads in them, but this is pure speculation on our part.
Netflix with ads will not let you play these series either
The icing on the cake of Netflix’s “Basic with Ads” plan is that it won’t let you watch some shows that aren’t owned by the platform, as they don’t have enough rights to distribute them with ads . Some of them are:
- The Crown
- cobra kai
- Arrested Development
- breaking bad
- The Good Place
- Grey’s Anatomy
- House of Cards
- How to defend a murderer
- new-girl
- Peaky Blinders
