The future Xiaomi 12S will be the first mobile phone with a Leica camera from the Chinese manufacturer, and now images and details of the smartphone have been leaked. The Xiaomi 12S will be an interesting smartphone, although with very few surprises compared to its predecessor.
Having collaborated with Huawei for years, until the launch of the Huawei P50 in mid-2021, Leica has now changed partners . The future Xiaomi 12S will be the first fruit of this collaboration, which slightly updates the current Xiaomi 12.
And it is that both mobiles will be identical, except for camera and processor. Regarding the camera, they receive new lenses designed together with Leica, but they keep the sensors . It has been leaked that there was a Xiaomi 12S prototype using a Sony IMX700, but it will not finally be released because it was exclusive to Huawei.
Therefore, it repeats the 50 MP main camera based on the Sony IMX766, as well as the 13 MP ultra wide angle and 5 MP telemacro. The collaboration with Leica could also lead to improvements in the software, but it is something that has not been leaked for now.
As the leaked photo shows, the design of the rear camera hardly changes, beyond the new Leica logo, nor does the exterior of the Xiaomi 12S compared to its predecessor.
For its part, the processor will be the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 , an update to Qualcomm’s current flagship chip. It is common for the brand to renew its most advanced model in the middle of the year with a little more power, but this year it has also moved production to the TSMC factories.
Samsung foundries were not getting the expected success rates with the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and in this way Qualcomm hopes to improve the stock.
Although the manufacturer has officially announced its agreement with Leica, for now the Xiaomi 12S has not been confirmed and some sources suggest that it will only be released in China .
Various manufacturers have sought agreements with historical names in the photography sector, such as OnePlus or Oppo with Hasselblad or Vivo with Zeiss, so Xiaomi’s move is not unexpected.
Of course, the Xiaomi 12S will not be a very showy premiere for Leica cameras , and it is to be imagined that in future models we will see a photographic section where the prestigious brand provides something more than just help with the lenses.
