You will continue to leave a trail on Twitter: the function of editing tweets will have a history

It seems increasingly clear that Twitter will allow you to edit tweets , a feature requested for years from the social network. However, the system would technically work more like a changelog , so that there is a record of each version of the tweet.

A couple of days ago, the Italian engineer Alessandro Paluzzi discovered an edit button hidden in the Twitter code, and was even able to anticipate the appearance of this function. However, it was unclear exactly how this delicate system would work.

Now it’s Jane Manchun Wong, another regular leaker of news in apps, who provides filtered details of the edit function. Apparently, the original tweet would never change, and would keep its ID (identification number), so that it could continue to be consulted, unless the creator deletes it.

By modifying the text and clicking on edit, another tweet would be generated with a new ID, which in a certain way would replace the original, always including a history of all the changes made . In this way there would be total transparency on the modifications made.

The function of editing already published tweets is highly demanded, since something as simple as correcting a small misspelling requires deleting the original and creating a new one.

On the other hand, there are fears that editing tweets will manipulate conversations and create confusion, since replies or retweets would take on a new meaning if the text is rewritten.

The history of changes will solve both problems, what remains to be determined is whether Twitter considers for practical purposes that the edited tweet becomes the main one, and gives it the same visibility as the first version.

The social network is experiencing a delicate situation due to Elon Musk’s offer to buy Twitter in its entirety, and probably the possibility of editing tweets on Twitter is still a bit late , with or without a history of changes, while this business issue is resolved.
