WhatsApp is already the application to send messages par excellence, but … can you imagine that it is also the application to send cryptocurrencies? Well, believe it, since WhatsApp has begun to test payments with cryptocurrencies in the United States without leaving the app.
This has been possible thanks to the integration of the platform with Novi, Facebook’s digital wallet (now Meta) that operates with a cryptocurrency called Pax Dollar (USDP) whose value is linked to the US dollar. Of course, for now, this payment system integrated into WhatsApp does not allow the use of other cryptos.
How to send and receive cryptocurrencies on WhatsApp with Novi
If you are in the United States or you are simply interested in knowing how payment with cryptocurrencies in WhatsApp works, you should know that it is similar to sending any other attachment on WhatsApp . You just have to follow these steps:
- Go to the chat of the contact you want to send crypto to.
- Press the attach icon (the one with the clip on Android and the one with the “+” on iOS).
- Select the Payment option from the menu.
- If this is the first time, you must log in with your Novi account or create a new one (an identity document and a debit card are required).
- Ready! Enter the amount and click on send , as if you were sending a message.
We remind you that for now this function is only available in the United States (in English and Spanish) and only allows you to send / receive money with the USDP cryptocurrency, which maintains a stable value in relation to the US dollar. That means 1 USDP = 1 USD.
Incidentally, WhatsApp does not charge commissions or place limits on how often you can send money , at the moment. There are also no charges for receiving or maintaining a balance. Surely when more people and companies start using WhatsApp as a payment platform, this will change.
So far that’s all we know about cryptocurrency payments on WhatsApp. Hopefully this feature will soon reach Spain and more countries because it looks to be very useful. In Brazil and India, WhatsApp already allows payments to be made, but not with cryptocurrencies but with the usual local currencies . It remains to be seen in what “form” WhatsApp payments will arrive in our country.
