Facebook Messenger, Messenger, has just been updated with a bunch of new features that will make privacy advocates smile. End-to-end encrypted chats are finally coming to the platform in all their glory , without the limitations of secret conversations. Now, it is possible to chat in a fully encrypted way in Messenger with all the features of a normal chat (stickers, reactions, GIFs, message forwarding and “typing” indicator).

Unfortunately, Meta still does not enable end-to-end encryption in Messenger conversations by default. However, with this new update, it is now possible to encrypt conversations, group chats, and calls with the touch of an option. These new features are available worldwide, so you should be able to try them out right now.

Messenger will also alert you if someone takes a screenshot of your encrypted chat

If you’re the type of person who likes to take care of their privacy on the Internet, you’ll be glad to know that from now on you’re not limited to secret one-on-one chats in Messenger. Finally, you can now enjoy end-to-end encrypted chats and group calls (both voice and video). And not only that. Now you can also send stickers and GIFs in encrypted Messenger chats , as well as react, forward secret messages, and see if the other person is typing.

But the most striking novelty of this update is the alert that someone is taking a screenshot of the chat , although this function will only be activated when you use temporary messages. If you’re in a normal secret conversation (without ephemeral mode active), Messenger won’t notify you if someone takes a screenshot.

As if that weren’t enough, Meta also announced that verified account badges will soon appear in end-to-end encrypted chats, and that you’ll be able to save any video or image you receive by long-pressing on it . They even promised to add a photo and video editor to the encrypted messaging so you can retouch your images or recordings before sending them.

Of course, remember that encrypted Messenger chats are not active by default . If you want to enjoy this extra layer of privacy, you should touch the information icon that appears in the chats and choose “Go to secret conversation”. That easy! The only bad thing is that you will have to do this with all the conversations that you want to encrypt.
