Instagram copies TikTok: full screen timeline

In a short time we will have a full screen timeline on Instagram , that is, as soon as we open the app we will see a photo or video occupying most of the space. It is very similar in design to TikTok , whose home screen plays a video directly.

The image above is an official design that is already being tested for some users of the social network. We can download Instagram beta for Android if we are interested, unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the full screen timeline will be activated, since only some selected users are receiving it.

As soon as we start the application we will see a video or a photo in full screen , although Instagram wants to prioritize the video, so it will have more and more presence in the main timeline. For now the content will belong to our contacts, in the long term the goal will be to give more visibility to the recommendations.

In any case, the “full screen” of Instagram is not as full as in TikTok. For now, the lower and upper bars with shortcuts are maintained , where all the options are: the search engine, the Reels, the store, the profile, the list of likes, the private messages and the icon to upload new content.

Changing all of these elements won’t be easy, so it makes sense to keep the basics of the previous design. In addition, Instagram Stories will continue to appear at the top . The official image that the company has shared is a bit misleading, since it corresponds to a timeline that has already been moved down.

Adam Mosseri himself, the head of Instagram, has presented this new design. It has asked recipients to comment on whether or not they find it useful, although there is no way to sign up to try it voluntarily.

Instagram’s focus is increasingly on video , precisely thanks to the success of Reels, a type of short clip copied from TikTok. The full screen vertical design makes clear the commitment to mobile to consume content, despite the fact that you can enter TikTok from the computer, and also on Instagram.

For now, Instagram’s full-screen timeline is a test , so it could get some changes before it goes live for everyone. What is clear is that Instagram will continue to add more video throughout 2022, and will continue to take ideas from TikTok.
