Huawei P50 Pocket is official: sophisticated design in a spectacular clamshell folding

The new Huawei P50 Pocket is a new folding mobile that opts for a compact clamshell design. That is, the screen folds vertically, so that it looks like a makeup case when closed, something enhanced by its slim design.

Therefore, the Huawei P50 Pocket comes to compete with models such as the Motorola RARZ and, above all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. It does so by betting on a design that is closer to the world of fashion than that of technology , something we already saw in the striking Huawei FreeBuds Lipstick headphones.

In the Huawei P50 Pocket we have an internal screen that reaches 6.9 inches when deployed , of the OLED type, which is updated at 120 Hz (300 Hz touch). The fingerprint sensor is on one side, in this case it has not been placed under the panel itself.

The exterior houses a 1.04-inch circular screen , to view notifications, useful information or perform certain quick actions. The cameras are housed in the other circle, so that the aesthetics of the P50 range, which we have also seen in the Honor 50, are maintained (despite the fact that both companies are now independent)

Huawei P50 Pocket, specifications

The new Huawei P50 Pocket aims at the premium range, as folding screens are still very expensive, and it has also focused on the use of metal to create quality finishes. However, the hinge of folding mobiles makes it necessary to make certain technical sacrifices.

For example, the Snapdragon 888 processor that is used only supports 4G (the standard model is 5G), and other features fall short of the more advanced models, although they do play a good role to be a foldable.

This is the full technical sheet of the Huawei P50 Pocket:

  1. Interior display: 6.9 inches OLED FHD + (2,790 x 1,188 px) at 120 Hz (300 Hz touch).
  2. External display: 1.04 inch circular (340 x 340 pixels).
  3. Processor: Snapdragon 888 (4G only).
  4. RAM and storage: 8 GB + 256 GB or 12 GB + 512 GB, accepts NM Cards.
  5. Rear camera: 40 MP + 13 MP + 32 MP.
  6. Front camera: 10 MP.
  7. Connectivity: 4G dual SIM, Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6 and NFC.
  8. Ports and sensors: USB C and side fingerprint reader.
  9. Battery: 4,000 mAh with fast charge at 40 W.
  10. Operating system: HarmonyOS 2.

The Huawei P50 Pocket battery is 4,000 mAh with a 40 W load , nothing surprising in a standard mobile, but very good figures in a folding one. For example, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 settles for just 3,300 mAh at 25 W.

At the camera level, the set is also very remarkable for the available space: a main sensor of 40 MP f / 1.8 , also an ultra-wide-angle sensor of 13 MP f / 2.2 of 120º and a new hyperspectral camera of 32 MP f / 1.8 .

The hyperspectral camera is capable of capturing colors beyond the standard spectrum , which promises to improve shots and get different photos than usual. A striking function is to point to the face to detect if we have applied the sunscreen properly

There is also a 10 MP interior camera , designed for video calls, since selfies are taken with the triple main camera thanks to the external screen.

At the command of the P50 Pocket we find HarmonyOS 2, Huawei’s own operating system, with which it replaces Android.
