Facebook Protect: what it is, how it works and how to activate it

Facebook is one of the most downloaded and used social networks in the world, very few surpass them, a good reason for this is Facebook’s security, since it has many ways to keep our accounts safe, such as Facebook Protect. Now we will see what it is and how it works.

As we always say, Internet security is very important and even more so in social networks, since we will never know for sure who is behind each profile created on them. It would not be the first time that someone pretends to be someone else on Facebook or the like .

After all the riots and scandals in which Facebook (owned by Meta) is involved, security and privacy are the points on which the company has set its sights, as well as the arrival of new functions to improve security, such as it is Facebook Protect .

What is Facebook Protect?

Facebook Protect are a set of new security features that the user can optionally activate , but very soon Facebook will force you to activate at least one of them. Let’s see what security features we have thanks to Facebook Protect.

Currently, to protect our Facebook account, we use a password. Well, surely you have heard of two-step verification, a more complex security method to protect our account. This is mainly based on Facebook Protect.

How does it work and how can we activate it?

Activating Facebook Protect is really easy. In order to activate it before Facebook notifies us and closes our account, we will tell you how you can do it in a few really simple steps:

  1. From your mobile you will have to open the Facebook app and go to the menu, located at the top right, made up of 3 horizontal bars .

  1. You will see a section called “Two-step authentication” and within this same section you will see “Use two-step authentication”.

Within this section we can activate the different security options that Facebook Protect offers us.

  1. Authentication application: this option enables Facebook so that we can log in with an external authentication application, such as Google Authenticator, among others.
  2. Recovery codes: These codes are master codes to always be able to log in in the event that you cannot access your authenticator app (this option is valid if you use two-factor authentication).
  3. Text Message (SMS): An SMS will be sent to you each time you log in on a different device. If you have this option activated, the mobile assigned to the SMS cannot be used to recover the password.
  4. Security key: with this option you will need a physical key or “dongle” to be able to log in to Facebook, it is one of the most secure functions, but less recommended.

Facebook Protect allows us to make our account much more secure , without a doubt the most recommended option is two-step authentication, since we almost always carry our mobile with us and we can access the security codes or our authentication app.
